How much preparation must I do?
The better prepared each student is, the more they will benefit from the course.

You will need to have completed all 16 IDC knowledge reviews. Revising your Divemaster Exams is a good way to refresh your diving theory knowledge. We recommend that you work with the Encyclopaedia of Diving and the Diving Knowledge Workbook.

It is also essential that you have practiced the 20 dive skills from your Divemaster course so that you are comfortable with them and are able to perform them to demonstration quality. If you feel that your skills are a little ‘rusty' – don't worry – see below for details of our 2 day Prep..

What will I do on the course and how long will it take?
The Instructor Development Course comprises of 3 sections:

Assistant Instructor Course which takes 3 days.
Open Water Scuba Instructor Course (OWSI) which is normally
run over 4 days.
Finally candidates sit the Instructor Exam (IE). This is run by a PADI Examiner over a 2 day period.

Here at Aliwal Dive Centre we allocate 11 days in total for the first two sections of the IDC. This because we want our Candidates to be fully prepared to sit the IE. With all this extra studying time we hope that when the time comes you will say that IE stands for "it's easy". Our aim at Aliwal Dive Centre is to produce EXCELLENT Instructors who are able to compete for jobs in an ever increasingly competitive market. Over 11 days you will develop your diving and teaching knowledge through self study, quizzes, exams and lectures. There will be a review of your confined and open water skills along with workshops, rescue assessments and candidate presentations.

2 day IDC Prep
If your demonstration skills and DM theory are a bit rusty, then your worries are over. We offer a 2 day course dedicated to bringing those skills back up to scratch. Remember this is an Instructor Development Course, practising Divemaster skills is not on the timetable. Call us for details of this invaluable course.

Where will I stay & eat?
Luckily Aliwal Dive Centre is a one stop Dive Centre, so as well as being the Premiere Dive Centre Operation here in Umkomaas, we also have our own Dive Lodge just upstairs. We have a dedicated Schoolroom and our heated training pool is right outside. You can stay in one of our ensuite dorm rooms for only R150 per night, or if your budget permits, a bed in an ensuite room with sea facing balcony and air con will only set you back R300 per night (based on 2 sharing).
